Mapping Time

Through the short Mapping Time project I focused my practice towards the abandoned fishing hut of Duddingston Loch. I visited the hut throughout the week to show how different times of the week create alternative readings upon the building. Allowing for the interplay of light to highlight different aspects of the frame. The composition of the series was achieve by maticulous planning and attention to detail to insure the exact framing in order to have the image as the constant and the light as the independant variable.

As a result of the boat house having no artificial light, I was completely reliant on natural light and the resulting shadows caused by surrounding architecture and flora. The boat house is situated in front of a hidden garden which alludes to a concealed narrative, I wanted to enforce this reading by capturing shadow on the barricaded entrance in the foreground. Thereby the eye is naturally drawn onto the horizontal edge of the building which extending into darkness, this is most effective in the photo taken at dusk. The sunset image has recorded dappled light through flora onto the entrance imitating the movement of water in the surrounding loch. In the photograph taken with midday light, I attempted to use the available light to illuminate the truth to the gradual dilapidation of the building, the even light effectively shows the chipping and discolouration of the paint.
