Sri Lankan Elephant

Updated: Mar 9, 2021

I remember posting the first image below to my instagram when I left for uni for the first time. A wave goodbye to life at home and a hi to a new city. Then friends in the comments just sarcastically ripped into me saying that I looked great in the photo....

Sri Lankan Elephants are native to their country and are the darkest of the Asian Elephants, with large areas of depigmentation (lightening or loss of pigment) which is seen around the ears, face, trunk or body. The oldest matriarch leads herd of sizes between 12-20. Unfortunately, the Sri Lankan Elephant population has fallen 65% since 2000, with elephants been poached and pushed into smaller areas due to human activity and deforestation. The Sri Lankan Elephant is now protected under Sri Lankan Law; punishment if broken being the death penalty.

Elephants are megafauna making them megaherbivores consuming up to 150kg of plant matter each day.
